Health insurance scheme in Germany
This compulsory insurance is becoming more and more the basic level of social protection.
However, insurants can feel free to complement the insurance with additional private insurances. Insurants who are not part of the mandatory health insurance scheme must take out a private health insurance. Assurance and service level are free to choose and the legislator does not interfere.
If Germans had the choice to choose between the different schemes, many would choose a private health insurance because the compulsory insurance causes ground for discontent.
Assurances of private health insurances are well known for a far better service level and often abated contributions. Private health insurances seem to be more attractive because of benefits such as seeing the senior consultant, a single room in hospital or reimbursement of dental treatments. One has to bear in mind that service comes with a price. A maximum of coverage and reimbursement means higher premiums. In contrast to the mandatory health insurance scheme, the private insurance companies do not cap the premiums. Private health insurances enable insurants to choose between base rate, which is less attractive and complete coverage.
